Premature Delivery

Labor before 37 weeks of pregnancy is considered to be premature, although most babies born after 32 weeks will have no lasting physical problems. However, only 50% of infants born before 24 weeks will be healthy; the other 50% will face permanent health problems or worse. A premature baby is at a higher risk of brain injury and other birth injuries, such as cerebral palsy. Because the baby is not fully developed, digestive and respiratory problems may also be a factor.

There are treatment options available when a woman goes into premature labor, and a doctor must use reasonable and appropriate care in helping the mother and the baby during this process. Premature delivery may be related to medical malpractice claims when a doctor or other medical professional is negligent in their care during a premature delivery.
