Cancer Patient Wins $8.1 Million in Malpractice Suit

According to SouthBendTribune.com -  Renee Flora, a 33 year old woman in South Bend recently won a cancer medical malpractice case.  The jury presiding over the case awarded the young mother of two $8.1 million in damages.

According to reports, Mrs. Flora had a growth removed from her big toe in 2004 by a local podiatrist.  After the growth was removed, things were fine for a year, and then took a turn for the worse when the growth resurfaced.  It was when the growth returned that Renee Flora was diagnosed with malignant melanoma by another physician.

After a 5 day trial that occurred last week, the jury awarded $8.1 million in damages to Mrs. Flora.  The case took place in St. Joseph Superior Court where the jury found Dr. W. Douglas Kolmodin guilty of medical malpractice.  According to SouthBendTribune.com, the jury concluded that, "Renee Flora's odds at beating the cancer were greatly reduced because he failed to have tissue from the excised growth tested for cancer."

Currently, Mrs. Flora has stage three cancer and only a 17% chance of living another 12 years.
