MRSA Cases in Hospitals Increase

By Bostwick & Peterson, LLP  Sep. 11, 2012 1:12p

MRSA, which stands for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, is an antibiotic resistant bacterium that poses a dangerous infection to individuals who contract it. Because the bacteria are resistant to antibiotics such as penicillin, it is much more difficult to treat than other infections. MRSA infections can affect any part of the body, including the blood, skin, lungs, joints, and bones. It can be appear in open wounds, through intravenous catheters, and the urinary tract. Common MRSA infections are found on the skin and soft tissue. Some strains of the bacteria can spread quickly, causing illness which can affect vital organs and lead to sepsis, a blood infection, toxic shock, or what has been called "flesh-eating" pneumonia. These more virulent strains can result in severe infection and death.

According to a recent report published in the journal "Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology," the number of individuals hospitalized in academic hospitals with MRSA infections doubled between 2003 and 2008. This number exceeded those hospitalized with AIDS and influenza combined in the years 2006 through 2008. The reason for the increase, according to the researchers quoted in the journal is that MRSA has become more prevalent in society, not just in hospitals. While those strains connected with hospital care have declined, strains occurring within communities throughout the country have grown, causing individuals to contract the infection outside of hospital and health care settings.

Contracting a dangerous infection while being treated in a clinic or hospital is the last thing any patient might expect to happen. Such infections can occur, however, when strict sanitary measures are not taken or when bacteria testing and prevention is not done. Those who incur such infections may face extensive additional medical care as well as the pain, discomfort, and trauma of such an event.
