Chicago Woman Awarded $14 Million for Dangerous Prescription

Last week, a court sided with a woman who had filed a medical malpractice lawsuit over a stroke she suffered on her wedding day, the result of a mistaken prescription. The claim said that her physician missed key risk factors and prescribed her the wrong contraceptives. The now 37-year-old woman came to the physician back in 2007 to get help for her irregular bleeding, and she was prescribed Yasmin, an estrogen-based medication. It was later determined that the physician had ignored glaring risks, such as the patient's age and high cholesterol, as well as the fact that she smoked. Her lawyer argued that she should have been given medication that only contained progesterone, which would have been an almost risk-free medication for her.

As it was, the faulty prescription had devastating consequences less than two weeks after she started taking the pills. She had a stroke on her wedding day and is now left paralyzed on the left side. She has permanent brain injury, needing care 24 hours a day, and her husband had to leave his career as a machinist to provide her care.

April 18, 2014, the jury came to the decision to award $14 million to the couple after a trial that lasted two weeks. This is not the only time that the Yasmin manufacturer has been under fire for the pills, which many have said can lead to dangerous blood clots. This couple also won a $2.5 million settlement against the hospital that sent them to the negligent physician.

Sadly, medical errors are common, yet not every error is malpractice. But there are many, catastrophic instances of medical malpractice, and if you believe that you or a loved one have suffered from the negligence of a medical professional, you could be owed full compensation.
