Former Texas Surgeon Arrested, Accused of Maiming Patients

A former Texas neurosurgeon is accused of maiming and killing at least two patients during surgeries. C. Duntsch, 44, who used to practice in Plano, Texas, has been arrested. Duntsch was booked at Dallas County Jail on six charges on July 21, 2015 in lieu of $600,000 bail.

He is facing one count of injury to a child, elderly or disabled person and five counts of aggravated assault causing bodily injury, records show.

While in practicing in Texas, he performed numerous spinal surgeries at Baylor Regional Medical Center, located in Plano. The neurosurgeon is accused of surgical malpractice and killing at least two of his patients between July of 2012 and June of 2013.

In June of 2013, his license was suspended. Upon investigating his surgeries, the Texas Medical Board found that he:

  • Had a pattern of not following the appropriate planning standards before operating,
  • Violated the standard of care in six of his patients,
  • Failed to recognize and respond to patient complications during and after surgery, and
  • Put his patients at risk, which resulted in at least two deaths.

The board decided to revoke Duntsch's license in December 2013 after finding that he continuously violated the acceptable standards of care. In 2014, Duntsch told The Dallas Morning News that 99 percent of everything said about him was completely false.

He complained to be a victim of rival surgeons and personal injury attorneys.

The federal lawsuits have been filed against Baylor Plano, alleging that the facility put revenue before safety. The suits alleged that Baylor was aware that Duntsch was a dangerous surgeon, but did nothing to stop him from performing back surgeries.
